Welcome to the November 2017 edition of the Monthly CME. I've put together a short list of articles, podcasts, and books for your reading pleasure. Topics will range from personal finance to life-work balance and more. Enjoy!
A great intro article for those new to saving and investing – How to Start Investing: A Complete Guide for Beginners.
I've been meaning to write a clear post on estate planning, but found the material a bit yawn producing. Thankfully, Mrs. Bita wrote a great post in it for Physician on Fire recently. Remember that estate planning is state specific. Be sure to check if documents need to be redone if you move states. Thankfully, we just need to update the POA with our move.
I recently wrote about my complicated postpartum course. I am grateful that I had my insurances in place. Postpartum hemorrhage (and my gestational diabetes) would've dinged me at least two health classes. And, the worse could've happened. Carrie and I discuss life insurance at the Hippocratic Hustle.
I recently wrote about blended family finances. Being a stepmother (I like the term bonus mom better) is challenging and being a mom to Eggy with a bonus son has brought up feelings that I did not expect. I am finally reading this book that was recommended to me.

Articles:
I am due this month (and when this post goes live, baby boy may be out!). I read this touching article by a physician mom who had her first twin babies at age 44.
I know very little about long term care insurance but it's a topic that comes up a lot – whether one should buy it or not. Mike Piper did a great job explaining things.
If you're part a dual high income couple, consider yourself lucky! You'll have more flexibility to get out of debt (if you have any) and a bigger shovel to throw at retirement savings. Unfortunately, most dual high income couples grow into the dual income too quickly.
Podcasts & Audiobooks:
My awesome FA was recently interviewed by Michael Kitces. I'm flattered that I'm considered a Center of Influence.
Speaking of Financial Advisors, Carrie and I discussed how to choose one @ The Hippocratic Hustle.
Books:
Sometimes finances can seem all about the numbers. A friend recently recommended this book to me that helps you discover a life that will continue vs. a life to retire to. Sounds similar to exercise M & I did with our FA where we had to really think about our goals and if they would be different if we had less time left.
Benjamin Graham taught Warren Buffet how to invest. This is a classic book!

Articles:
I hope everyone in Harvey's path is OK. I donated some money to the Texas Diaper Fund and Houston Food Bank. The disaster definitely got me thinking about emergency preparedness. No matter where you live there are things to consider.
As you go through your financial journey, you need to celebrate milestones, big and small. WCI wrote about the 14 Financial Milestones one should celebrate. Look for a post from me about a milestone I will soon be celebrating :).
I love when new women join the Facebook group Women Physicians Personal Finance and find financial nirvana. A common newbie question is “How should I invest my money?” They get that low cost index funds is probably the way to go, but it is understandably overwhelming for the new investor. I love this article by Mama Fish Saves about the simple 3 fund portfolio. However, I will point out that I do not use this and feel that bonds really have no place for those investing long term.
Podcasts & Audiobooks:
WCI interviewed me on his podcast last week. We discussed my non-traditional path to medicine as well as some of the unique issues physician women and moms have.
Dr. Carrie Reynolds and I continue to records podcasts for the Hippocratic Hustle. Since my impending maternity leave is on my mind we recorded a podcast about maternity leave and even discussed how not to get caught up with all the baby gear you'll want to buy.
Books:
All new moms need this book. It will prevent you from buying everything in sight. At least you'll make informed choices. Some of the bigger ticket items I decided on:
- Halo bassinest (Essentia)
- UPPAbaby Cruz stroller
- UPPAbaby Mesa carseat
- Baby Bjorn bouncer
- Lillebaby baby carrier
- Keekaroo Peanut Changer
- Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard (for grandma's place)
- Infant Optics baby monitor
The classic intro book for medical students, residents and physicians. This was the first book I read on the topic during my last year of residency.]]>

Articles:
It's index fund month! A great primer on mutual funds by WCI with lots of nice screen shots.
Wall Street Physician discusses the S&P 500 vs. Vanguard's Total Stock Market, two very popular all-inclusive index funds to invest in. Bottom line – you can't go wrong with either.
Meanwhile Jim discusses why the Vanguard Total Stock Market is his favorite fund.
Podcasts & Audiobooks:
Disability insurance for physicians is confusing. Here is a great podcast with physician turned insurance broker Stephanie Pearson @ The Hippocratic Hustle.
I recently listened to Bringing up Bébé on Audible and the narration is fantastique. The author discusses her observations as an American raising children in Paris. The French seem to be doing it right.
Physician burnout and sadly, physician suicide is on the rise. Dr. Pamela Wible is tackling this taboo topic. Listen to her on the Happy Doc.
Last month I featured one of Nisha Mehta's articles. She was recently interviewed by Carrie @ he Hippocratic Hustle.
Books:
Are you in the debt is ok camp? See how you feel after reading Cory Fawcett's The Doctors Guide to Eliminating Debt.
Unfortunately you can't buy this book on Amazon, but it is worth a read. Simple Wealth, Inevitable Wealth by Nick Murray discusses why 100% equities is the way to build wealth. Nick is the mentor to financial advisors.

A reminder that Dr. Carrie Reynolds and I launched our first podcast Friends Talk Finance as part of a recurring series on the Hippocratic Hustle Podcast. We had over 1000 downloads in the first week! We are having a blast recording them. If you loved it, please write us a review on iTunes :).
Articles:
Dr. Nisha Mehta writes about physician wellness and shares her 8 tips from my non-medicine friends that make me a happier doctor.
Are you relatively new to personal finance? Don't know where to start? I like Dr. Dahle's aka The White Coat Investor‘s article The Bare Minimum.
I don't consider myself a true minimalist, but I am of the “more stuff does not make me happy camp.” Joshua Becker @ Becoming Minimalist discusses how the choices we make about money affects us.
Podcasts:
If you are a female physician then you're probably familiar with Physician Mom's Group or PMG. I recently listened to Dr. Nii Darko's podcast interview with PMG Founder Dr. Hala Sabry. I loved listening to her candidness about how she manages to be a full-time doctor, mom, and head of PMG.
A shout out to my neighbor financial blogger Joshua Holt @ Big Law Investor was recently interviewed (episode 36 on 5/29/17) on the Happy Lawyer Project podcast.
I agree with Dr. Jim Dahle that Social Security (episode 19 on 6/26/17) will still be around when it's our turn to collect.
Books:
M & I just signed our wills last week! I introduced the topic of estate planning recently and found this book indispensable.
Like most pregnant women, I've started nesting – more like decluttering like mad. I read (well more like listened to on Audible, see link below for an intro offer) this book recently in preparation.
