August CME

Welcome to the August edition of the Monthly CME. I’ve put together a short list of articles, podcasts, and books for your reading pleasure. Topics will range from personal finance to life-work balance and more. Enjoy!

Articles:

It’s index fund month! A great primer on mutual funds by WCI with lots of nice screen shots. Wall Street Physician discusses the S&P 500 vs. Vanguard’s Total Stock Market, two very popular all-inclusive index funds to invest in. Bottom line – you can’t go wrong with either. Meanwhile Jim discusses why the Vanguard Total Stock Market is his favorite fund.

Podcasts & Audiobooks:

Disability insurance for physicians is confusing. Here is a great podcast with physician turned insurance broker Stephanie Pearson @ The Hippocratic Hustle. I recently listened to Bringing up Bébé on Audible and the narration is fantastique. The author discusses her observations as an American raising children in Paris. The French seem to be doing it right. Physician burnout and sadly, physician suicide is on the rise. Dr. Pamela Wible is tackling this taboo topic. Listen to her on the Happy Doc. Last month I featured one of Nisha Mehta’s articles. She was recently interviewed by Carrie @ he Hippocratic Hustle.

Books:

Are you in the debt is ok camp? See how you feel after reading Cory Fawcett’s The Doctors Guide to Eliminating Debt. Unfortunately you can’t buy this book on Amazon, but it is worth a read. Simple Wealth, Inevitable Wealth by Nick Murray discusses why 100% equities is the way to build wealth. Nick is the mentor to financial advisors. ]]>

I read (listened to) Bringing Up Bebe a few years ago and recommended it to my DILs 🙂 It was a very eye-opening book and I agree, the French system makes a lot of sense. Especially enjoyed the meals and tasting discussions!

Sounds so logical and kind of how I grew up … def don’t want a household where the kids hold the adults hostage!

Thanks for the share, Dr. Bonnie! Indeed, you can’t go wrong with either the S&P 500 or Total Stock Market. Just pick one (or a mix of both) and stick with it!

Just saw this! Thanks for mentioning my article and podcast. Loved checking out some of the other work that you mentioned, and find your advice so helpful and pertinent to female physicians! So important to have people like you in this space.
